Smith’s Invasion of Kentucky
Bragg’s Invasion of Kentucky
Stuart’s Second Ride in Maryland
CSA. The first promotions to the grade of Lieutenant-General were confirmed by the Confederate Senate. The need for an interim grade between General and Major-General to command groups of divisions or army corps had become increasingly evident. The use of interim expedients such as the nomination of “Wing” or unofficial Corps commanders was no longer adequate and the creation of official Corps commands to be commanded by Lieutenant-Generals was permitted. The first two men appointed to the grade were James Longstreet and Edmund Kirby Smith. Longstreet was currently only the seventh-ranking Major-General (and twelfth in the entire army) but now rose to sixth in the army overall. Smith rose from sixteenth to seventh overall. Longstreet’s advancement derived from his successes during the campaigns of 1862, but Smith’s arose mainly from his ambition for autonomy in the Kentucky campaign.
Florida. Expedition to Beresford Lake ended.
Kentucky. Skirmish at Chesser’s Store (or Dog Walk or Dry Ridge) near the Salt River.
Kentucky. Skirmishes on the Mackville Pike and the Bardstown Road.
Kentucky. Skirmishes on the Bardstown Pike
Kentucky. The Confederate Army of General Braxton Bragg left Perryville at midnight and escaped in the darkness to Harrodsburg. The proposed dawn counter-attack by Major-General Thomas Leonidas Crittenden’s II Corps did not materialise. When Major-General Don Carlos Buell asked him at 8 pm why Crittenden had not attacked at dawn, it emerged that he had only been ordered to be “ready to attack” and had been awaiting the order to go forward.
In the meantime, the Confederates had vanished from the field. Bragg had succeeded in causing damage to Buell’s larger army at Perryville and in gaining time to achieve a junction with Major-General Edmund Kirby Smith at Harrodsburg. Bragg’s army crossed the Salt River and burned the bridges before deploying a battle line two miles from Harrodsburg in heavy rain to await Smith’s arrival from Versailles. Confederate Brigadier-General Joseph Wheeler’s cavalry screened the retreat and reported that the Union army had not left Perryville in pursuit.
Maryland. Skirmish at Four Locks.
Maryland. Confederate Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart started a reconnaissance expedition into Maryland and Pennsylvania, which became known as his “Second Ride around McClellan”. At daylight, he crossed the Potomac River at the mouth of Black Creek about 20 miles west of Williamsport. He had a force of 1,800 men handpicked from the brigades of Brigadier-General William Edmondson Jones, Brigadier-General Fitzhugh Lee, and Brigadier-General Wade Hampton, along with four guns under Major John Pelham. He avoided the strongly defended area of Hagerstown, Pennsylvania, and reached Chambersburg during the night. He destroyed a machine shop, public stores and bivouacked in the town. Union Major-General George Brinton McClellan’s Army of the Potomac was slow to react and did not obstruct the Confederate raid.
New Mexico Territory. Union expedition from Fort Union to the Canadian River and Utah Creek began.
Tennessee. Skirmish near Humboldt.
Texas. A Union naval force under Commander William Bainbridge Renshaw (USS Westfield, USS Harriet Lane, USS Owasco, USS Clifton, and the mortar schooner Henry Janes) now held Galveston. Christi, and Sabine City were also in the hands of the US Navy but there were insufficient soldiers or marines available to hold these ports permanently.
Virginia. Incidents at Aldie and Blackwater River.
