Smith’s Invasion of Kentucky

Bragg’s Invasion of Kentucky

Arkansas. Expedition to Yellville ended.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Cross Hollow.

Arkansas. Skirmish near Helena.

District of Columbia. Union Major-General Don Carlos Buell’s message describing his intention to march to Nashville, Tennessee, was received by Major-General Henry Wager Halleck in Washington,. Halleck issued peremptory orders for Buell to change his route and to redirect his attention and his army towards Eastern Tennessee as explicitly directed by the President.

Kentucky. Skirmishes at Big Hill, Cross Road, Mountain Side, and Little Rockcastle River.

Kentucky. Skirmish at Rockcastle River.

Lexington, Kentucky. Confederate Colonel John Hunt Morgan and his raiders circled eastward and into Lexington. They skirmished with part of the 3rd Ohio Cavalry before they took the town from the Union garrison comprising the 3rd Ohio Cavalry and 4th Ohio Cavalry. The Confederates left the town before the end of the day. Union Major-General Gordon Granger gathered his scattered cavalry forces to pursue Morgan’s men.

Kentucky. The Confederate army of General Braxton Bragg and Lieutenant-General Edmund Kirby Smith continued their march through Barboursville across the Kentucky barrens towards the Cumberland Gap. Smith’s troops provided the rearguard, although the Union pursuit had already been called off.

Missouri. Skirmish near Uniontown.

Missouri. Confederate guerrillas attacked a small Union detachment at California House and forced them out of the area.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Kirk’s Bluff.

Virginia. Expedition to Thoroughfare Gap ended.

Virginia. Incidents at Gainesville and Hay Market.
