Go to December 12 1862

North Carolina. Union expedition from New Bern to Goldsboro began.

North Carolina. Skirmish on the Kinston Road.

Tennessee. Reconnaissance from Nashville to Franklin began.

Tennessee. Skirmish at Wilson Creek Pike.

Tennessee. Skirmish at Franklin.

Tennessee. Skirmish near Nashville

Tennessee. Skirmish at La Vergne.

Tennessee. Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis reached Knoxville and conferred with Lieutenant-General Edmund Kirby Smith about future strategic plans in eastern Tennessee.

Tennessee. Confederate Brigadier-General Nathan Bedford Forrest launched a cavalry raid against Union Brigadier-General Ulysses Simpson Grant’s communication lines in Tennessee. Forrest had received orders the previous day to interrupt the rail supply line to Grant’s army, which was campaigning down the Mississippi Central Railroad. If Forrest could destroy the Mobile & Ohio Railroad which ran south from Columbus, Kentucky, through Jackson to join the Mississippi Central, Grant would have to curtail or halt his operations. Forrest had organised between 2,100 and 2,500 new recruits into a brigade of four regiments and several small detachments and had the support of four guns. He departed Columbia and headed for the Tennessee River.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance on the Gloucester peninsula from Yorktown to King and Queen County, Middlesex County, and Matthews County.

Virginia. Incident at Zuni.

Virginia. Skirmish at Darkesville.

Fredericksburg, Virginia, also known as Marye’s Heights. Before dawn, Union engineers began to lay pontoon bridges across the icy Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg. They planned to assemble six bridges, two just north of the centre of Fredericksburg, a third on the southern end of town, and three more further south near the confluence of the Rappahannock and Deep Run. These bridges were required to enable the Army of the Potomac to cross to the south bank and to attack the Confederates beyond on a broad front. Engineers also went into action at Skinker’s Neck, about twenty miles from Fredericksburg. where they were helped by Maine troops to cut trees for a corduroy road to the riverside. The sound and activity at this point were intended to distract the Confederates with the threat of a crossing.
At Fredericksburg, the bridge-builders came almost immediately under harassing fire from the town as Confederate sharpshooters from the brigade of Brigadier-General William Barksdale observed their work. Progress in building the bridges was extremely slow as the Confederates maintained a persistent fire for several hours.
At 10 am, Union Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside ordered his artillery to open fire on the town to suppress the harassing fire. The 147 heavy calibre guns on Stafford heights commenced a devastating bombardment of the town which lasted for over an hour. The bridge-building began again and made more rapid progress whenever the defenders fell silent. Union gunners fired more than 5,000 shells against the town and the ridges to the west. By noon, it was clear to the Union Chief of Artillery, Brigadier-General Henry Jackson Hunt, that artillery would never dislodge the defenders so he proposed that landing parties should cross in pontoon boats to secure a small bridgehead and root out the sharpshooters. A Michigan regiment and two Minnesota regiments made the attempt and successfully established a secure bridgehead. The Confederate army could not send large numbers into the town because of the covering Union artillery, and by 7 pm Barksdale’s rearguard had evacuated the town and rejoined the main line to the west. The town buildings were gradually cleared and by dusk more Union infantry had crossed into the bridgehead so that the construction of the bridges could be completed.
