Big Hill, KY

Fort Ridgely, MN

Smith’s Invasion of Kentucky

Arkansas. Expedition to Helena ended.

Kansas. Union expedition from Fort Leavenworth to Hickory Grove began.

Kentucky. Incident at Flat Lick.

Kentucky. A Union force arrived at Mammoth Cave and ran into a small group of Confederate guerrillas. A brief skirmish ensued and the Confederates were captured.

Big Hill, Kentucky, also known as London. Confederate Colonel John S Scott’s cavalry made an expedition covering 160 miles to attack London near Richmond. They defeated part of two Union regiments (7th Kentucky Cavalry and 3rd Tennessee Infantry) in a two-hour battle. Only 65 Union soldiers escape to the nearby mountains; 50 men were killed or wounded and 75 captured.

Minnesota. Operation at New Ulm began.

Fort Ridgely, Minnesota. A Sioux Indian uprising began in the state of Minnesota. The Santee Sioux of Minnesota under Chief Little Crow, angered by the failure of the Union government to provide annuities and by the poor quality of rations, went on the rampage. They murdered several settlers near the small town of Acton and began a week of attacks against nearby settlements and Union forces. They killed approximately 800 settlers and soldiers in all, took many prisoners, and caused extensive property damage throughout the Minnesota River Valley. Fort Ridgely, about twelve miles from the Lower Sioux Agency, became the refuge for white civilians. The fort’s commander, Captain John S Marsh, set out with most of his men for the Lower Sioux Agency. Before reaching the agency, a large force surprised the soldiers and killed half of them including Marsh, and pursued the survivors back to the fort.

Missouri. Expedition to Forsyth and Ozark ended.

Missouri. After the Confederate victory at Lone Jack, Union forces led by Brigadier-General James Gilpatrick Blunt and Brigadier-General Fitz Henry Warren arrived and forced the Confederates to withdraw from the area. Warren occupied the town of Lone Jack the same day.

North Carolina. A landing party from USS Ellis, Master Benjamin H Porter, destroyed Confederate salt works, a battery, and barracks near Swansboro.

Tennessee. Incident at Pine Mountain.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance to Forge Bridge and Jones’ Bridge.

Virginia. Confederate Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart, commanding the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia, rode to the east of Clark’s Mountain near Raccoon Ford. He expected to meet Brigadier-General Fitzhugh Lee and his cavalry brigade moving forward from Hanover Station in order to launch a joint raid to Rappahannock Station in the Union rear. However, Fitzhugh Lee had been delayed by a detour via Louisa Court House to scout and to collect rations and supplies. During the night, Union cavalry crossed at Raccoon Ford, which had been left unguarded by Brigadier-General Robert Augustus Toombs, and almost captured Stuart and his headquarters staff. Major Norman R H Fitzhugh, Stuart’s Assistant Adjutant-General, was captured in possession of General Robert Edward Lee’s plan to attack Major-General John Pope’s Army of Virginia at Clark’s Mountain. The second Confederate cavalry brigade under Brigadier-General Wade Hampton stayed behind to protect Richmond
