Confederate Invasion of New Mexico

Rosecrans’ West Virginia Campaign

USA.  Concern over the maladministration and apparent aimlessness of Union Major-General John Charles Frémont led the US President Abraham Lincoln to meet Major-General Winfield Scott to discuss how to manage affairs in this key command.

Kentucky. Expedition to Paducah began.

Kentucky. Following the Confederate violation of neutral Kentucky by occupying Columbus, Union troops under Brigadier-General Ulysses Simpson Grant moved from Cairo, Illinois, to occupy Paducah and Smithland at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers. Grant’s small force was escorted by the gunboats USS Tyler and USS Lexington under Commander John Rodgers USN. Grant requested permission from Major-General John Charles Frémont to attack the Confederates who had arrived the previous day at Columbus. Instead, Frémont ordered Grant to prepare a fortification on Fort Holt, ten miles from Paducah, and to hold his position. For the next two months, only limited demonstrations were conducted against the Confederates while their defences were improved and extended.

Missouri. Expedition to Jackson ended.

Missouri. Skirmish at Papinsville.

Missouri. Captain Andrew Hull Foote USN arrived at St Louis to succeed Commander John Rodgers USN in command of naval operations on the western rivers. Foote had been appointed to the command of the Western Gunboat Flotilla on 30 August 1861.
