Completion of Transcontinental Telegraph Line
Disbandment of the Pony Express

East Kentucky Operations

USA. The first transcontinental telegraph line was completed. It connected an existing network in the eastern United States to a small network in California by a link between Omaha and Carson City via Salt Lake City. It was a milestone in electrical engineering and in the formation of the United States of America. It served as the only method of near-instantaneous communication between the east and west coasts during the 1860s.

California. The “Pony” Express was prepared for disbandment after operating for eighteen months. It provided a mail service from 3 April 1860 to 24 October 1861 delivering messages, newspapers, and mail with relays of riders between Missouri and California. Operated by the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, the Pony Express was a major financial investment and it reduced the time for messages to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to about ten days. It was the most direct means of east-west communication before the transcontinental telegraph was established on 24 October 1861, and provided a vital link to California. Despite a heavy subsidy, the Pony Express quickly went bankrupt after the telegraph service was established.
