Virginia. A Confederate reconnaissance by the Chatham Grays Company (Virginia Cavalry) continued to probe from Yorktown to Newport News and halted around Big Bethel Church.

Virginia. The Confederate garrisons placed experimental “torpedoes” (later known as naval mines) off Aquia Creek in the Potomac River, marking the first use of such weapons in the war. The torpedoes were spotted by the USS Pawnee and later removed by the USS Resolute.
