Central Pacific Railway Company Incorporated

McClellan’s West Virginia Campaign

California. The Central Pacific Railway Company was incorporated at Sacramento for the purpose of building a transcontinental rail line.

Maryland. The side-wheel steamer St Nicholas, making a scheduled run between Baltimore and Georgetown, DC, was captured by Confederates who had boarded her posing as passengers at the steamer’s various stopping points along the Potomac River. The Confederates were led by Captain George Nichols Hollins CSN who took command of the vessel and began to search for his target – the USS Pawnee.

South Carolina. The Jefferson Davis was a 187-ton brig, launched in about 1845. After undergoing several name changes, the Northern Press usually described the vessel as the former slave ship Echo. It was the second Confederate privateer to put out to sea from Charleston and was captained by Louis M Coxetter. The ship easily evaded the rudimentary blockade that was in place off Charleston and remained at sea for nearly two months, making nine captures. These were the schooner Enchantress, brig John Welsh, schooner S J Waring, brig Mary E Thompson, ship Mary Goodell, ship John Carver, bark Alvarado, schooner Windward, and brig Santa Clara. The Enchantress was later recaptured, Alvarado was chased ashore and destroyed by a blockader. The Windward, Mary E Thompson, and Mary Goodell were released with prisoners, and John Carver was burned at sea. The black cook of S J Waring killed three sleeping members of the prize crew and sailed her to New York City, where he was received as a hero. Only the John Welsh and Santa Clara were taken into Southern ports for adjudication.

Virginia. A skirmish at Shorter’s Hill resulted in one Union soldier killed and one wounded, and two Confederates killed.
