Battle of Mount Zion Church, MO (CWSAC Limited Battle Union Victory)

East Kentucky Operations

North Missouri Operations

Kentucky. Union Brigadier-General Lewis Wallace began an expedition to Viola and Camp Beauregard

Kentucky. Skirmishes at Sacramento and Grider’s Ferry between Union Brigadier-General Thomas Leonidas Crittenden and Confederate cavalry under Lieutenant-Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Mount Zion Church, Missouri. At about 2 am Union Brigadier-General Benjamin Mayberry Prentiss set out with his entire force to confront Confederate Colonel Caleb Dorsey’s force near Hallsville in northeastern Missouri. The Confederates numbered around 900 men, but they were barely trained local volunteers and many were unarmed. The Union advance routed one company of Confederates on the Hallsville Road around 100 yards east of Mount Zion Church and learned that the rest of the force was nearby in the churchyard, situated on a high hill. Prentiss advanced on the church and made three charges. During the third attack, the Confederates exhausted their ammunition, fell back to their wagons, and were overrun. The battle ended around 11 am. The surviving Confederate irregulars were routed to Columbia. The remainder dispersed with Dorsey heading westward into Perche, nearer the Missouri River. After negotiation and an exchange of prisoners, Dorsey made camp near Everett. Within days Dorsey received orders to scatter his forces, ending Confederate recruitment attempts in Central Missouri. The remaining elements of Dorsey’s command crossed the Missouri River in February 1862. The Confederates lost 25 dead, 150 wounded, and 60 captured, as well as losing wagons, horses, and weapons. (CWSAC Limited Battle Union Victory)

Virginia. Union occupation of Beckley and Raleigh Court House.
