Confederate Invasion of New Mexico
Wilson’s Creek Campaign
USA. US President Abraham Lincoln appointed Gustavus Vasa Fox as Assistant Secretary of the US Navy. Fox supported the Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles with his technical expertise in maritime matters. Fox had already planned the naval relief of Fort Sumter in 1861, the start of operations against New Orleans, and the opening of the Mississippi River. He was a superb administrator and naval planner who masterminded much of the Union naval strategy of the war.
Missouri. Skirmish at Edina.
Missouri. Union Brigadier-General Nathaniel Lyon marched out of Springfield towards Cassville in an attempt to surprise the Confederate forces gathering to the southwest. He had gathered a well-drilled force of 6,000 men, including 1,200 Regular Army soldiers and several artillery batteries. He had a broader aim of securing control of southwest Missouri before advancing against the capital of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Missouri. A Union expedition left St Louis under the direction of Major-General John Charles Frémont, with the intended destinations of Bird’s Point and Cairo, Illinois.
New Mexico Territory. US Governor of the New Mexico Territory Abraham Rencher left office.
New Mexico Territory. Confederate Lieutenant-Colonel John R Baylor declared all of New Mexico Territory south of the 34th Parallel to be the Confederate Territory of Arizona and became its Military Governor with his headquarters at Mesilla. He declared all Federal offices vacant and appointed Confederate sympathisers in their place.
