Alabama. Lieutenant John Lorimer Worden USN departed Washington by rail with secret orders to Captain Henry A Adams, commanding USS Sabine. Adams was the senior naval officer in the Pensacola area, and he was directed to reinforce the garrison of Fort Pickens. Sailors to assist in this purpose were being carried from New York aboard USS Pawnee and USS Powhatan.
